University of Cyprus

The University of Cyprus (https://www.ucy.ac.cy/en/) was established in 1989 and admitted its first students in 1992. It was founded in response to the growing intellectual needs of the Cypriot people, and is well placed to fulfil the numerous aspirations of the country. The University is a vigorous community of scholars engaged in the generation and diffusion of knowledge. Despite its brief history, the University of Cyprus has earned the respect of the international academic community and the appreciation of Cypriot society. Admission for the majority of undergraduate students is by entrance examinations organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, and the competition for places is intense. A number of places are reserved for students with special needs or circumstances. Every effort is made to offer practical solutions to students facing specific problems, be it access to University facilities, or assistance on academic issues. The University of Cyprus (UCY) comprises 9 faculties, 22 departments and 11 research units.

Department of Architecture

The mission of the Department of Architecture ( https://www.ucy.ac.cy/arch/ )as an outstanding academic center of studies within the School of Engineering at the University of Cyprus, but also in the wider European region, is to educate students to become successful architects who can perform internationally, but who will also have the knowledge and sensitivity to respond to and to influence positively the formulation of the built environment in the eastern Mediterranean region.

Central to the philosophy of the department’s mission are the synergies achieved through the dynamic synthesis of design emanating both from the humanities and the technological dimensions of Architecture. Such an endeavour takes place through the formulation of a design culture that considers theoretical, historical, political, and technological quests to redefine the role of architecture in the making of the built environment. Some of the challenges for architects in the academic and professional contexts have to do with claiming a new role in contemporary society, as well as making a positive and sustainable contribution to the manmade environment. The understanding of cities and urban form in relation to contemporary socio-economic phenomena aimed at informing design is central to the Department’s research aims.

Society and Urban Form research lab (SURF)
The Society and Urban Form (SURF) research lab is a multidisciplinary scientific endeavor focusing on describing and interpreting how the built environment impacts society and on translating evidence from the analysis of urban environments for application in design practice and policy (https://www.surf.com.cy). SURF aims to foster research capacity and excellence in urban design, planning and governance towards understanding and addressing urban challenges, as well as valuing and exploiting opportunities afforded by cities and urban communities.  The mission of the lab is to support development, design and planning of cities which enables and fosters social progress, sustainable practices and healthy habitats. SURF hosts staff , Postdoc and PhD students with expertise in the various research strands covered by the lab: evidence-based design and planning (EBDP), urban morphology, healthy cities, sustainable urban governance and participatory design practices.
