TWIN2EXPAND Summer School 2025

Urban transformations through collaboration, research, and place-based learning

Between 10–21 June 2025, the University of Cyprus and SURF Lab hosted the TWIN2EXPAND Summer School, a two-week intensive programme organised in the context of the Horizon Europe TWIN2EXPAND project. The school brought together researchers, academics, and students from partner institutions to collectively explore urban challenges through the lens of green infrastructure, spatial justice, biodiversity, and nature-based solutions.

The summer school featured a dynamic programme of activities including:

  • Thematic lectures and discussions on accessibility, urban inequality, mapping, participatory methods, and species classification
  • Hands-on workshops on digital tools, spatial analysis and collaborative design
  • Daily group work in interdisciplinary teams, encouraging exchange of ideas and peer learning
  • Final presentations and a poster exhibition showcasing the students’ evolving research and reflections

This rich educational experience allowed participants to deepen their understanding of urban complexity while developing practical skills for research-based urban transformation.

A highlight of the programme was a field visit to the Pedieos Linear Park, a vital green corridor in Nicosia. Participants had the chance to explore:

  • The spatial and ecological structure of the park
  • Biodiversity features, native vegetation and water ecosystems
  • Challenges of accessibility, maintenance, and public use
  • The integration of nature-based solutions into local urban infrastructure

The visit concluded with an informal picnic under the trees, offering space for reflection and connection in a relaxed atmosphere.

On the last day, the participants came together for a final round of presentations and reflections, followed by a friendly group lunch in the heart of Nicosia. It was a moment to celebrate the ideas shared, the skills developed, and the friendships formed during the two-week journey.

Throughout the summer school, the emphasis was on interdisciplinary collaboration, critical inquiry, and place-based learning. Participants came from various backgrounds — architecture, geography, urban studies, ecology — and brought different perspectives into conversation, enriching the learning experience.

The University of Cyprus and SURF Lab extend their warmest thanks to all participants, guest speakers, and collaborators who contributed to the success of the programme.
